All usage of watercraft within Zion National Park mandates a wilderness permit, which is free of charge and available at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center either on the day before or on the day of your expedition.

Permits for navigating the Virgin River are granted when the river's flow exceeds 150 cubic feet per second, as monitored by the US Geological Survey. Only watercraft designed for whitewater conditions are permitted. All operators must have on board an approved personal flotation device.

Kayaking through The Narrows section of the Virgin River is recommended solely for expert kayakers equipped to handle prolonged self-sufficiency and possess the skills to navigate class V Whitewater. 

Depending on the river's flow, these rapids may at times be classified as less challenging. Permits for this kayaking adventure are not available on the day of the trip; they must be acquired the preceding day. Starting early is crucial for those planning to kayak through The Narrows, and permits are only issued if the river maintains a flow rate of 150 to 600 cubic feet per second for 24 straight hours.

At no time are inner tubes allowed on any watercourse in the park.
